India begins construction of first hydrogen-powered vessels
India has commenced the construction of its first green hydrogen-powered ships, according to Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. The announcement was made in a written reply to the Lok Sabha following a query from MP Kesineni Shivanath on the progress of hydrogen-based vessels.
Cochin Shipyard Limited and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited are each building a vessel powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells developed with indigenous technology. The initiative is part of the government’s plans to encourage cleaner fuel use and cut emissions in maritime transport.
Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, ₹115 crore has been allocated until 2025–26 for ship design, technology trials, infrastructure creation and pilot projects. The programme is structured in two phases. The first involves retrofitting existing ships to operate on hydrogen fuel. The second covers the development of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure at key ports.
The Shipping Corporation of India and V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) have been named as implementation partners. VOCPA has submitted a proposal for a 750 cubic metre green methanol bunkering facility in Tuticorin, which is among the selected sites for green hydrogen infrastructure.
Deendayal Port, Paradip Port and Tuticorin Port are also being developed as hydrogen hubs. The government’s long-term plan aims to position these ports as centres for the production and export of green hydrogen.
According to the minister, these measures are intended to expand the use of renewable fuels in shipping and support emission reduction along sea routes.
