Energy companies, Inpex and Idemitsu Kosan has joined hands with All Nippon Airways (ANA) to jointly undertake carbon neutralisation of jet fuel across the airline’s supply chain to power all scheduled ANA flights departing from and arriving at Hiroshima Airport between May 1 and May 31, 2023.
The effort is being undertaken in conjunction with the Group of Seven (G7) Hiroshima Summit scheduled to take place in Japan on May 19-21, 2023. The three companies have said they will continue to study opportunities towards building a carbon-neutral society after the G7 Hiroshima Summit.
The ANA Group has already set a medium to long-term environmental goal of achieving net zero CO2 emissions from aircraft operations by fiscal 2050.
INPEX and Idemitsu will acquire carbon credits to neutralise 100% of the CO2 generated across ANA’s jet fuel supply chain from the production of crude oil to the operation of flights. Idemitsu will then supply the carbon-neutralised jet fuel to ANA.
The jet fuel deployed on the carbon neutral flights will be neutralised by the procurement of carbon credits certified by the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as offsetting all the CO2 generated across the jet fuel supply chain. CORSIA was developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
As per the agreements, INPEX will produce equity Murban crude oil in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE); Idemitsu will procure the Murban crude oil for jet fuel refinement at a self-operated refinery; INPEX and Idemitsu wil acquire carbon credits to neutralise 100% of the CO2 generated across the jet fuel supply chain; Idemitsu will supply the carbon-neutralised jet fuel to ANA and then the Japanese airliner will operate carbon neutral flights.
The procedure and completion of the carbon neutralisation of the jet fuel will also be third-party certified by SOCOTEC Certification Japan. This will be the first instance in Japan where an airline is supplied with jet fuel whose CO2 emissions are reduced to net zero across the entire supply chain.
