Lloyd’s Register Decarbonisation Hub Joins Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center as Knowledge Partner

The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping has announced a formal partnership with the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, which will join the Center as a Knowledge Partner. The announcement follows several years of collaboration between the two organizations on ammonia safety and risk management in maritime applications.

Since 2021, the Center and the Decarbonisation Hub have worked jointly on safety protocols and risk assessments related to the use of ammonia as a marine fuel. With this partnership now formalized, the Decarb Hub is expected to further enhance the Center’s work with its technical expertise and strategic insight.

The Lloyd’s Register Decarbonisation Hub operates as an independent, not for profit research and action unit, focusing on systems thinking and technical guidance to support the maritime sector’s energy transition. Its mission closely aligns with the Center’s goal of accelerating the adoption of zero emission shipping solutions.

As a Knowledge Partner, the Decarb Hub will contribute in areas such as risk and safety engineering, human factors analysis, and policy development. Their involvement will support projects related to the safe implementation of alternative marine fuels, including ammonia, and provide guidance on crew safety and human centered design for ammonia based fuel systems onboard vessels.

Bo Cerup Simonsen, CEO of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center, welcomed the partnership and noted its value in advancing safe and sustainable decarbonization of global shipping. James Forsdyke, Managing Director of the Decarbonisation Hub, highlighted the combined strengths of both organizations. He noted that the collaboration would build on shared capabilities in areas such as green corridor development, quantitative risk assessment, and seafarer competency mapping. “We look forward to contributing to the global effort of safely scaling sustainable fuels across the maritime industry,” he said.
