L&T to Develop Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Projects in Kandla

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has acquired land in Kandla, Gujarat, for the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia production facilities, reinforcing its commitment to clean energy and sustainable industrial growth. This move aligns with India’s broader push to scale up green hydrogen adoption under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and various sector-specific pilot initiatives.

The announcement was made by L&T Chairman and Managing Director SN Subrahmanyan during the company’s recent shareholder meeting, where he outlined key advancements in L&T’s clean energy portfolio, which includes green hydrogen, green ammonia, and small modular reactors (SMRs).

“Our electrolyser manufacturing is already in progress, placing us in a strong position within the green hydrogen space,” Subrahmanyan said. He also shared that L&T had recently received regulatory clearance from the U.S. Department of Energy to introduce SMR technology to India—an important step in the country’s efforts to explore alternative low-carbon energy sources.

“L&T is one of only three Indian companies approved for this technology transfer,” he noted. “This marks the beginning of our work to bring next-generation nuclear energy solutions to India.”

While the company’s current projects involve international collaborations, Subrahmanyan emphasized that L&T’s long-term strategy focuses on building indigenous capabilities—including the in-house development of technologies and critical component manufacturing—tailored to meet the energy needs of developing nations.

Beyond its domestic plans in Kandla, L&T is also offering its expertise in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green methanol projects globally.
