Maersk has expanded its fleet with the addition of the 17,480 TEU container ship Bangkok Maersk, which was christened in mid-September. The vessel was built by South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) and sails under the Danish flag.
The newbuild measures 351 meters in length with a beam of 56 meters and has a deadweight tonnage of approximately 198,229. Classification has been granted by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
Equipped to operate on methanol, Bangkok Maersk is expected to cut emissions by up to 60 percent, contributing to the company’s goal of achieving net-zero operations by 2040.
The ship joins Maersk’s fleet shortly after its sister vessel Beijing Maersk entered service in August, following the earlier delivery of the series’ first methanol-powered unit Berlin Maersk in July. The sister ships are currently deployed on the company’s East-West network, with Bangkok Maersk anticipated to enter service on the same routes.
