Italian class society RINA has granted an approval in principle (AiP) to MAN Energy Solutions for its methanol-ready MAN L/V 32/44CR engine
The AiP clears the way for a retrofit concept to the four-stroke engine that would convert it to a methanol dual-fuel operation.
Methanol has several physical advantages as a marine fuel, including a liquid state at ambient temperatures and its accordingly easy handling aboard vessels, compared with gaseous fuels. Additionally, two-stroke engine technology using methanol has been in service for seven years. Under combustion, methanol also emits fewer NOx emissions and no SOx emissions or particulate matter.
Methanol is also much less hazardous to marine life compared with conventional marine fuels. The AiP certificate permits the use of outer ship hulls as bunker tanks, increasing fuel-storage capacity on board.
