Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Launches Study on India’s Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Export Potential

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has begun a study to develop a master plan for facilities and logistics needed to export green hydrogen and green ammonia from India. The initiative is being undertaken under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s (METI) FY2023 Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation supplementary program in partnership with India-based Hygenco Green Energies.

India is advancing its plans to produce and export green hydrogen and ammonia as part of its clean energy transition. The fuels are gaining traction in Japan and Southeast Asia, where governments are considering their use in long-term decarbonization strategies.

MHI will use its technical expertise to create models for production and usage of green hydrogen and ammonia under real environmental conditions, taking into account transport constraints. The company signed an agreement with Hygenco in August to access data related to green ammonia production.

The study will examine how facilities can be developed under economically viable conditions, linking production and consumption models. Findings will be used to formulate a master plan for carbon-neutral fuel use across countries such as India and Singapore. According to MHI, the results will also be shared with governments worldwide to support policy planning and cooperation on carbon-neutral fuel adoption.

MHI has set a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and is positioning energy transition projects as a key area of business growth. The company said the study will support strategies for decarbonization and business development for operators in Japan and other markets engaged in the carbon-neutral fuel value chain.
