Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and trading house ITOCHU Corporation have signed a joint development agreement to advance ammonia bunkering as a marine fuel.
Under the agreement, the companies plan to carry out a ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering demonstration in Singapore using their jointly owned ammonia bunkering vessel and ammonia dual-fuel Capesize bulk carriers. The trial is scheduled for the second half of 2027.
The project is aimed at accelerating the introduction of ammonia-fueled vessels and the establishment of bunkering infrastructure to support their operation.
MOL is also moving ahead with its previously announced partnership with Belgium-based CMB.TECH to co-own three ammonia dual-fuel Capesize bulk carriers. The vessels are under construction at China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding yard and are slated for delivery between 2026 and 2027. Once operational, they are expected to be the world’s first Capesize bulkers capable of running on ammonia and will be chartered by MOL.
