MSC Hosts Sustainability Experience in Antwerp for Global Supply Chain Leaders

Senior leaders in sustainability, procurement, and supply chain from 12 multinational corporations recently gathered in Antwerp, Belgium, for a two-day customer sustainability experience hosted by MSC. The event offered attendees a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the company’s efforts to promote environmental responsibility across the logistics sector.

The program aimed to demonstrate MSC’s commitment to supporting customers with their Scope 3 emissions—indirect emissions that typically fall outside a company’s direct control but represent a significant portion of their overall carbon footprint. Tours of operational sites provided insights into how MSC integrates sustainability into its core activities, and how it collaborates with partners to promote end-to-end responsibility across the supply chain.

Scope 3 Emissions in Focus

Scope 3 emissions can account for over 70 percent of a company’s carbon footprint. With increasing pressure from regulators, stakeholders, and net-zero commitments, businesses are seeking reliable partners to help measure, reduce, and report on these emissions. Logistics providers are playing a larger role, offering both transparency and tangible progress towards climate goals.

Collaborating on Climate Goals

Positioning itself as a strategic partner in decarbonization, MSC is working across three primary areas: fleet modernization, alternative fuels, and the development of industry frameworks. The company is currently expanding its fleet with more than 150 LNG-capable vessels and implementing energy efficiency upgrades on existing ships.

MSC’s biofuel program offers customers a lower-emission transport option, while its partnerships with energy and technology providers aim to accelerate the development of zero-carbon fuel alternatives. In parallel, the company is supporting broader industry transformation by training seafarers for next-generation vessels and working with policymakers to help shape enabling regulations.

Beyond maritime operations, MSC is investing in sustainable solutions across terminals and inland logistics. These include emission reductions at port terminals, increased use of intermodal transport, and optimization of route efficiency.

Insights from Antwerp Operations

Antwerp, one of Europe’s largest seaports and a key MSC hub, served as the setting for the customer experience. Attendees visited several key facilities to witness sustainability efforts in action.

At the MSC PSA European Terminal, participants observed electric yard machinery and learned about ongoing investments in vessels designed for alternative fuels like LNG. The MEDREPAIR facility showcased container repair and refurbishment practices aimed at waste reduction. MEDWAY’s use of electric locomotives was presented as a step toward energy-efficient inland logistics. The EDR Antwerp shipyard also offered a look at the maintenance and retrofitting of vessels to improve environmental performance.

Customer Response and Industry Momentum

The event generated meaningful dialogue between MSC and its customers, reflecting a growing industry expectation that logistics providers actively contribute to climate-related objectives.

“Sustainability is a business imperative that is deeply embedded in our operations,” said Claudio Bozzo, Chief Operating Officer at MSC. “We are proud to provide our customers with real-world insights into our initiatives and to foster stronger collaboration moving forward.”

Dimitri Ruggiero, Vice President Global Accounts at MSC, noted the strong level of engagement during the event. “The customer interest we saw highlights the critical role logistics partners play in enabling broader climate ambitions,” he said. “This experience sparked valuable conversations around deeper collaboration.”
