NITI Aayog has launched the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI), a new analytical tool designed to assess the progress of Indian States and Union Territories (UTs) in the transition to electric mobility. The index evaluates efforts across three core themes: transport electrification, charging infrastructure readiness, and EV-related research and innovation.
The IEMI was released in New Delhi by Rajiv Gauba, Member of NITI Aayog, alongside B.V.R. Subrahmanyam (CEO, NITI Aayog), Kamran Rizvi (Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries), and other senior officials.
Developed as a benchmarking and policy-support tool, the IEMI scores states and UTs out of 100 across 16 indicators. It aims to highlight best practices, identify performance gaps, and support evidence-based planning by state governments.
According to NITI Aayog, sub-national governments play a critical role in enabling India’s broader decarbonisation targets, including the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The Index is expected to promote transparency, encourage healthy competition, and support knowledge-sharing among states.
