Sinogas-Sinochem Petrochemical Co., Ltd. and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) successfully completed Hong Kong’s first delivery of B30 marine biofuel oil. The fuel, certified under the ISCC-EU scheme, was supplied to an OOCL-operated container vessel and marks a significant step in both companies’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions from maritime transport.
B30 biofuel consists of 30% biodiesel blended with conventional marine fuel. Under the updated IMO MEPC 83 guidelines, bunker barges are now permitted to carry blends of up to 30% biofuel, expanding opportunities for low-emission fueling across global ports. Compared to the previously used B24 blend, B30 offers further reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
For OOCL, the operation represents the company’s first use of B30 fuel in Hong Kong and a continuation of its carbon reduction strategy. The initiative also supports broader industry goals for decarbonization, in line with tightening international emissions standards.
The biofuel supplied by Sinogas-Sinochem meets current sulfur regulations and contributes to Hong Kong’s positioning as a forward-leaning green port in Asia. Sinotrans, a key stakeholder in this collaboration, has reiterated its aim to expand the availability of marine biofuels through partnerships with industry players, while Sinopec continues to promote sustainable energy options across the maritime sector.
