At the start of 2025, Finland’s Port of Helsinki achieved the target of making its own operations carbon neutral but continues efforts to reduce the total emissions generated in the port area. In addition to obtaining the necessary energy from carbon-free sources, the Port of Helsinki has taken a number of steps to lower its energy usage in order to achieve the target of carbon neutrality. To make up for its residual climate emissions, the port additionally buys a tiny quantity of voluntary carbon offset credits.
In 2019, the Port of Helsinki set out to become carbon neutral in its own activities. The objective relates to the emissions produced by the port firm itself, which includes emissions from business travel, the fuel used by the port’s own vehicles and machinery, and the electricity and heating used in the buildings and the port area.
