Robert Allan Ltd. has been contracted to design the AmpRA 3600, a fully battery-electric tugboat for Tianjin Port in northern China. The vessel will be built by Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd., following previous collaborations involving similar hull designs with conventional propulsion.
The AmpRA 3600 will feature an all-electric propulsion system powered entirely by batteries, with no onboard diesel generators. It will be the first battery-electric tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd. to operate in China.
Key systems will be supplied by major Chinese manufacturers. CATL will provide over 7 megawatt-hours of battery capacity, the 704 Institute will deliver the electrical systems, and Nanjing High Accurate Marine Equipment Co., Ltd. will supply the L-drive propulsion units.
