TotalEnergies and CMA CGM Form Joint Venture for LNG Bunkering Operations in Rotterdam
TotalEnergies and CMA CGM Group have entered into a 50-50 joint venture to develop and manage liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operations at the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The collaboration aims to expand LNG infrastructure and logistics capabilities in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region, a key hub for maritime activity in Europe.
As part of the agreement, the joint venture will deploy a new 20,000 cubic metre LNG bunker vessel in Rotterdam by the end of 2028. The vessel will support LNG refueling operations for CMA CGM’s fleet as well as other vessels operating in the region. The JV will provide end-to-end services, including LNG reloads from the Gate terminal and direct delivery to ships.
The project will integrate with TotalEnergies’ existing logistics assets, including the 18,600 cubic metre LNG bunker vessel Gas Agility, which has operated in the ARA region since 2020. The companies expect the combined operations to improve flexibility and efficiency in LNG supply across the network.
In support of CMA CGM’s fleet transition, TotalEnergies will supply up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually from 2028 through 2040. The fuel will serve the company’s growing fleet of dual-fuel LNG-powered vessels, which is expected to reach 123 ships by 2029.
The initiative is part of broader efforts by both companies to reduce emissions from maritime transport and scale alternative fuel infrastructure within European ports.
