TSUNEISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES (CEBU), Inc. (THI), the Philippine-based shipbuilding subsidiary of TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd., has launched the world’s first methanol dual-fuel KAMSARMAX bulk carrier. The vessel was launched on July 17, 2025, at Slipway No. 2 at the THI shipyard and is expected to commence its maiden voyage in January 2026. By utilising methanol as a propulsion fuel, the vessel is designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent, nitrogen oxides by 80 percent, and sulphur oxides by 99 percent compared to conventional fossil fuel-powered ships. These benefits can be further enhanced through the adoption of green methanol, offering a pathway to near-zero emissions. Built with adaptability in mind, the vessel features a shallow draft and low air draft, making it compatible with a diverse range of global ports. Measuring 229 metres in length, it is also capable of operating at Kamsar Port in the Republic of Guinea, one of the key terminals for the bauxite trade. The launch event served as a recognition of the technical capabilities and collaborative efforts of the THI workforce.
