A coalition of leading businesses has launched the UK Ammonia Alliance (UKAA) to promote the large-scale adoption of low-carbon ammonia across the country’s industry, energy, agriculture, and transport sectors, with the goal of supporting the UK’s energy security, decarbonization efforts, and economic growth.
Ammonia, a key component in modern agriculture and industrial processes, has traditionally been used in fertilizers, refrigeration, and manufacturing. The emergence of low-carbon ammonia, however, is seen as a major opportunity to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors while enabling new applications such as hydrogen transport and storage, power generation, and sustainable fuels.
Industry coalition calls for policy support
The UK Ammonia Alliance said it aims to help industries deploy low-carbon ammonia solutions at scale and called for supportive government policy to ensure the UK can capture the full economic and energy security benefits of this growing market.
The alliance will hold its first public event in Parliament next month, where it plans to release a policy paper outlining the key steps required to unlock the UK’s ammonia potential.
The founding members of the UKAA include AFC Energy, Air Products, Blended Products, Clean Air Power, Exolum, Green Cat Hydrogen, HYCAP, Industrial Chemicals Limited, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, N-Gen Energy, and Statkraft.
Industry leaders highlight opportunity
Mike Rendall, CTO of AFC Energy and Chair of the UKAA, stated:
“Ammonia represents a major opportunity for the UK to accelerate the energy transition while driving industrial growth… As the Alliance’s first Chair, I’m looking forward to building a unified industry voice to help channel the UK’s innovation and expertise into good jobs, clean energy and food security for people across the UK.”
The launch of the alliance has been welcomed by international ammonia trade bodies.
Trevor Brown, Executive Director of the Ammonia Energy Association, said:
“The Ammonia Energy Association welcomes the establishment of the UK Ammonia Alliance… The UK has world-class R&D capabilities and industrial expertise, and it offers a strategic location as an import/export hub. For these reasons we look forward to sharing our global knowledge and expertise, and working together with the UKAA to support the growth of the clean ammonia market in the UK.”
Stephen Jackson, CEO of Ammonia Europe, added:
“I welcome the launch of the UK Ammonia Alliance. It’s great to see this national initiative take shape, which will be a strong complement to Ammonia Europe’s work to decarbonise the European ammonia industry and drive uptake of clean ammonia…”
A growing market for clean ammonia
The establishment of the UKAA reflects a broader global shift toward clean ammonia technologies, which are increasingly viewed as a critical enabler of the hydrogen economy and a pathway to achieving net-zero targets. With its industrial base and geographic advantages, the UK is positioned to become a key player in the emerging global ammonia value chain.
