The UK Maritime Innovation Hub, led by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), is set to open in April 2026 with a focus on advancing maritime innovation while maintaining safety standards.
The Hub will provide support for vessel operators, shipbuilders, start-ups, and technology developers seeking to transition new concepts into safe, operational use. It was first outlined in the Department for Transport’s Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy earlier this year, and development work is underway to align its services with the needs of the maritime sector.
The initiative will assist organisations working in areas such as autonomy, alternative fuels, and smart shipping. Guidance will cover regulatory pathways from prototype development through to sea trials, supporting evidence generation for approvals under frameworks including MGN 664, MGN 550, and the Workboat Code Edition 3.
Planned services include dedicated account management to streamline approval processes and reduce administrative requirements. Early engagement opportunities will also be available to help innovators manage regulatory risk and accelerate deployment timelines.
“This is an exciting time to be a part of the maritime industry. With the Innovation Hub, we’re strengthening our support for innovators to bring the latest technologies and findings to our shores,” said Lars Lippuner, MCA Director of UK Customer Maritime Services.
“We are currently building a workforce to help navigate the route to approval while upholding safety and regulatory standards. We cannot wait to see the potential it unlocks, not just for the UK but on an international scale,” he added.
