Enerkem Inc. and Technip Energies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enter into a collaboration agreement aimed at accelerating the deployment of Enerkem’s technology platform for biofuels and circular chemical products from non-recyclable waste materials.
Enerkem, based in Montreal, has one plant operating in Alberta and two projects in the construction phase: one in Quebec and the other in Spain. In Alberta, the firm’s plant has been designed to accept difficult to recycle materials from the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream and convert them into advanced bio-methanol and circular methanol.
The collaboration with Technip Energies, headquartered in France, seems designed to allow Enerkem to ramp up the number of projects it can bid on and accept, since Technip operates in 35 countries with some 15,000 employees.
To also help expedite the deployment of its technology, Enerkem says it intends to establish a development company commissioned to acquire sites and secure relevant permits to host what it calls its biorefineries.
