IndianOil is set to establish the country’s largest green hydrogen production facility at its Panipat Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, targeting an annual output of 10,000 tonnes by 2027. The project represents a major step in the company’s transition towards clean energy and is expected to significantly lower carbon emissions by replacing fossil-based hydrogen in refinery operations.
The state-owned energy major has finalised the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) for the upcoming green hydrogen generation unit. According to a company statement released on Friday, the facility is scheduled to begin operations by December 2027. Once operational, the plant will produce green hydrogen to substitute hydrogen derived from fossil fuels currently used in refining processes.
This initiative is a key part of IndianOil’s broader decarbonisation strategy and supports the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched by the Government of India. By adopting green hydrogen, the company aims to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to the nation’s clean energy goals.
Arvinder Singh Sahney, Chairman of IndianOil, shared updates on the project during an interaction with ANI at the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos. He confirmed that the project had reached a crucial phase. “The green hydrogen plant is now alive. We have received highly competitive bids, tenders are currently under evaluation, and within a month we expect to award the contract. Commissioning is expected within two years,” he said.
