Uttar Pradesh is set to strengthen its renewable energy efforts with the planned establishment of a Centre of Excellence for green hydrogen, supported by Japanese stakeholders. The development follows a recent visit to Japan by a delegation from the state government, aimed at exploring international cooperation in clean energy.
According to The Times of India, the delegation engaged in discussions with Japanese government representatives and industry leaders to examine opportunities in green hydrogen production and related technologies. The initiative is positioned to facilitate knowledge sharing and joint projects between Uttar Pradesh and Japan.
Among the technologies reviewed during the visit was the Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle that emits only water as a byproduct. A government spokesperson stated that the state’s interest in such technologies aligns with its broader objectives for zero-emission transport.
The delegation also toured key facilities in Yamanashi Prefecture, including the NESRAD Green Hydrogen Plant, a Hydrogen Research Centre, and the Suntory Hakushu Distillery, which operates a power-to-gas unit. These site visits provided insights into practical applications of hydrogen in both research and commercial settings.
A senior official from Uttar Pradesh highlighted the importance of international collaboration in scaling up renewable energy. The state is also looking to expand its use of solar, hydro, and biomass energy as part of its broader transition toward sustainable power generation.
The proposed Centre of Excellence is expected to support the development of pilot projects, foster technological exchange, and contribute to policy planning for clean energy implementation in the state.
