Axpo Completes Spain’s First Ship-to-Ship Bio-LNG Bunkering for Container Vessel at Algeciras

Axpo has carried out Spain’s first ship-to-ship Bio-LNG bunkering operation for a large container vessel at the Port of Algeciras. More than 4,000 cubic metres of ISCC-certified Bio-LNG were supplied to the CMA CGM FORT BOURBON, marking a notable development in the use of low-carbon marine fuels in the region.

The operation adds to Axpo’s recent LNG bunkering activities at other strategic ports, including Málaga and Sines. The Bio-LNG was sourced through a virtual liquefaction process at the Enagás Regasification Plant in Cartagena, which has held International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) status since July 2024. This certification confirms that the facility meets European Union criteria on environmental performance, traceability and social responsibility.

Cartagena continues to serve as a key infrastructure point in the Mediterranean for the delivery of alternative marine fuels. The use of virtual liquefaction and certified supply chains reflects a broader shift in LNG infrastructure toward accommodating renewable and low-carbon energy carriers.

Daniele Corti, Head of Small Scale LNG at Axpo, stated that the operation supports ongoing efforts to expand the company’s Bio-LNG offering in response to rising demand for compliant marine energy solutions.

The bunkering service is part of a broader strategy to meet decarbonisation targets within the shipping industry by integrating alternative fuels into established logistics routes.
