Imabari Shipbuilding has delivered a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel Capesize bulk carrier to Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK). The vessel, named SG Dawn, was handed over on 7 August at the company’s Saijo Shipyard.
Flying the Japanese flag, the SG Dawn measures nearly 300 metres in length, 50 metres in breadth, and 25 metres in depth, with a gross tonnage of 110,845. It has been classified by Japan’s ClassNK.
The vessel is designed to operate on both conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO) and LNG. According to Imabari Shipbuilding, LNG propulsion is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 20 to 30 percent compared to traditional fuel use, while eliminating sulphur oxide emissions entirely. The main engine is equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to meet Tier III nitrogen oxide requirements.
Additional energy efficiency measures include devices installed near the propeller, a twisted rudder, and low-friction hull coating to reduce resistance in seawater.
