Ashok Leyland and CALB Group Announce 20-Year Partnership on EV Batteries

Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group, has entered into a 20-year strategic partnership with China’s CALB Group Co. to advance battery technology and support India’s electric mobility transition.

The agreement will focus on lithium-ion cell development and battery pack assembly. In the initial phase, Ashok Leyland will import cells from CALB for integration into its electric vehicle portfolio. Over time, the company plans to localize production, establishing facilities for cell manufacturing, design, and assembly in India.

The collaboration involves an investment of more than ₹5,000 crore over the next 7 to 10 years. The batteries produced under the partnership will first be deployed in Ashok Leyland’s electric buses and trucks. In subsequent stages, supply will extend to two-wheeler, three-wheeler, passenger vehicle manufacturers, and renewable energy storage projects.

To support the program, Ashok Leyland will set up a dedicated research and development hub in India. The center will focus on areas including battery innovation, materials science, software integration, and thermal management. CALB will provide technical expertise to accelerate the process.

Industry analysts note that while India is seeking self-reliance in green technologies, international collaborations offer a gradual approach to developing domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The partnership is positioned to expand Ashok Leyland’s role in India’s EV ecosystem, aligning with national priorities on renewable energy adoption, localisation, and sustainable transport solutions.
