Renault Group and Ford Motor Company have entered a new strategic partnership aimed at expanding Ford’s electric vehicle (EV) portfolio in Europe and strengthening both companies’ competitive positions in the region’s transitioning automotive market.
Two New Ford EVs to Be Built on Renault’s Ampere Platform
A central element of the partnership is an agreement to develop two Ford-branded electric passenger vehicles based on Ampere, Renault Group’s dedicated EV platform. Renault Group will manufacture both models in northern France as part of the ElectriCity industrial hub.
Designed by Ford and developed in collaboration with Renault Group, the upcoming models will incorporate Ford’s brand characteristics, with tailored driving dynamics and user experiences. The first of the two vehicles is expected to enter European showrooms in early 2028. The project represents the start of a broader product rollout for Ford in the region.
Light Commercial Vehicle Collaboration Under Consideration
Alongside the EV agreement, Renault Group and Ford have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore a joint programme for selected light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in Europe. The partners will assess potential co-development and co-manufacturing opportunities for Renault- and Ford-branded LCVs.
Executive Commentary
François Provost, CEO of Renault Group, said: “Renault Group is proud to announce a new strategic cooperation with Ford, an iconic car manufacturer. This partnership shows the strength of our partnership know-how and competitiveness in Europe. In the long term, combining our strengths with Ford will make us more innovative and more responsive in a fast-changing European automotive market.”
Jim Farley, president and CEO of Ford Motor Company, stated: “The strategic partnership with Renault Group marks an important step for Ford and supports our strategy to build a highly efficient and fit-for-the future business in Europe. We will combine Renault Group’s industrial scale and EV assets with Ford’s iconic design and driving dynamics to create vehicles that are fun, capable, and distinctly Ford in spirit.”
Leveraging Shared Capabilities
The collaboration will draw on the Ampere platform’s established manufacturing ecosystem and Renault Group’s industrial base in northern France to produce the new Ford EVs. Both companies aim to apply their combined expertise in design, innovation, software, and services to address increasing competitive and regulatory pressures in the European market.
Renault Group and Ford also expect the initiative to build on their long-standing experience in light commercial vehicles, supported by shared industrial scale and supply networks.
