The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has inducted Samudra Pratap, the first of two indigenously designed and built Pollution Control Vessels (PCVs), at a formal ceremony held on 5 January 2026 at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
The induction adds to India’s maritime environmental response capability and supports domestic shipbuilding objectives. Samudra Pratap has been designed and constructed in accordance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
Vessel capabilities and role
The PCV is equipped with systems designed for pollution response and maritime safety operations. These include an advanced pollution detection suite, flush-type side sweeping arms, floating booms, a high-capacity surface skimmer, a dedicated pollution response boat, portable barges, and an onboard pollution control laboratory. An external fire-fighting system is also fitted to enable rapid response to fire incidents at sea.
According to ICG, the vessel will be deployed for marine pollution control, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and the protection of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Indigenous content and shipbuilding collaboration
With more than 60 percent indigenous content, Samudra Pratap aligns with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India programmes. The project involved coordination between the Indian Coast Guard, Goa Shipyard Limited, and the Indian Register of Shipping.
Cdr KK Dhawan, Head Defence at IRS, said:
“The classification of Samudra Pratap reflects one more successful collaboration between Indian Coast Guard, Goa Shipyard Limited and Indian Register of Shipping in delivering complex, mission-critical vessels built to global standards, while reinforcing India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defence shipbuilding.”
The second Pollution Control Vessel under the programme is expected to follow, further expanding the Coast Guard’s capacity to respond to marine pollution incidents along India’s coastline.
