Amazon India Partners with Eicher to Deploy 1,000 Electric Trucks for Quick Commerce Operations

Amazon India has unveiled a partnership with Eicher Trucks and Buses to roll out approximately 1,000 electric trucks across its logistics network by 2028, in what is set to become one of the largest dedicated electric truck deployments in the country’s e-commerce and quick commerce sector.

The fleet will support Amazon Now, the company’s ultra-fast delivery service, which handles groceries, personal care items, electronic accessories, and daily essentials with delivery windows measured in minutes.

What Trucks Are Being Deployed?

The deployment centres on the Eicher Pro-X, a custom-built electric small truck developed jointly by both companies for intra-city logistics. The trucks will move goods between Amazon’s outskirt fulfilment hubs and micro fulfilment centres located in residential zones closer to consumers.

Key operational specifications include:

Daily range of 100–180 km per vehicle

Capability to complete multiple trips between facilities each day

Fast-charging capability of roughly 50 minutes per charge

Amazon has already inducted around 50 of these electric trucks into its network, with the remaining units to be added in phases through 2028.

Where Will the Electric Trucks Operate First?

The initial rollout will cover three metro markets: Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. These cities form the core of Amazon Now’s existing operations.

Subsequent deployment will extend to Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Mangalore, and Vizag, mirroring Amazon Now’s broader expansion roadmap. The company has previously stated its intent to take the quick commerce platform to 100 Indian cities, supported by a network of more than 1,000 micro fulfilment centres.

How Does This Fit Amazon’s Wider EV Strategy in India?

Amazon India has already deployed over 12,000 electric vehicles across its logistics operations in the country, spanning last-mile delivery and middle-mile transport.

Abhinav Singh, VP Operations at Amazon India and Australia, said the Eicher collaboration “represents another step towards building a more sustainable transportation network for Amazon’s expanding operations.”

SS Gill, Chief Commercial Officer at VECV (Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles), stated that the Eicher Pro-X electric trucks were “co-created alongside Amazon to specifically address the operational requirements of ecommerce and quick commerce logistics in India.”

Why Does This Deployment Matter?

The order signals a structural shift in how quick commerce middle-mile logistics is being built out in India. As delivery promises shrink from days to minutes, operators are increasingly reliant on dense networks of micro fulfilment centres fed by frequent, short-haul truck movements—a use case where electric trucks offer a viable cost and emissions profile compared with diesel alternatives.

For Eicher, the order provides anchor demand for its electric small truck programme at a time when commercial EV adoption in India remains concentrated in two- and three-wheeler segments.
