Artemis Technologies has launched the Artemis EF-12 Pilot, describing it as the world’s first fully electric hydrofoil pilot boat designed specifically for pilot transfer operations.
The vessel has been launched and is currently undergoing sea trials ahead of its planned entry into commercial service.
Electric Hydrofoil Designed for Pilot Transfer Operations
Purpose-built for pilotage, the Artemis EF-12 Pilot combines battery-electric propulsion with hydrofoil technology to deliver the speed, manoeuvrability and stability required for daily pilot transfer missions.
According to the company, the hydrofoil system lifts the hull above the water, reducing hydrodynamic drag, vessel wake and overall energy consumption compared with conventional pilot boats. The design is also intended to provide a smoother ride and improved handling across a range of sea and weather conditions.
The vessel builds on more than four years of operational experience with Artemis Technologies’ Artemis eFoiler® platform, which has been developed for commercial electric maritime applications.
Focus on Safety and Operational Efficiency
The EF-12 Pilot has been designed with pilot transfer safety as a key priority. Features include an optimised deck layout, improved visibility from the wheelhouse and an active flight control system that enhances vessel stability during pilot boarding and transfer operations.
The company said the design aims to support reliable operations while reducing emissions associated with port service vessels.
Growing Demand for Zero-Emission Pilot Boats
The launch comes as ports and pilot organisations increasingly explore low-emission alternatives for harbour operations as part of wider decarbonisation strategies.
Artemis Technologies said customers for the EF-12 Pilot announced to date include Brabo in Belgium, the Swedish Maritime Administration, Noatum Maritime in Abu Dhabi and the Port of Tyne in the United Kingdom. “Pilotage places very specific demands on a vessel. The Artemis EF-12 Pilot applies proven foiling technology to meet those demands, delivering an efficient, fully electric solution that supports pilots, crews and port operations globally,” said Dr Iain Percy, CEO of Artemis Technologies.
