Netherlands’ H2 Hollandia Project Produces First Green Hydrogen from 5 MW Electrolyser

The H2 Hollandia project in the Netherlands has produced its first green hydrogen using a 5 MW electrolyser, marking a key milestone in the development of a renewable hydrogen facility designed to reduce solar energy curtailment and support regional hydrogen supply.

The first production run generated approximately 25 kilograms of green hydrogen using a Plug Power electrolyser installed at the 115 MW Vloeivelden Hollandia solar park in the province of Drenthe.

Project Aims to Reduce Solar Curtailment

Developed by Dutch renewable energy company Novar, the H2 Hollandia project integrates hydrogen production with a large-scale solar park to utilise excess renewable electricity that would otherwise be curtailed.

Installation of the electrolyser began in November last year, with Novar estimating that the project could reduce energy curtailment at the solar facility by as much as 50% once fully operational.

Work is continuing on the remaining infrastructure, including the installation of hydrogen compression and filling systems required for commercial operations.

Green Hydrogen to Supply Transport and Industry

Once completed, the facility is expected to produce approximately 300 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

The hydrogen will be loaded into tube trailers at the site and transported to refuelling stations and industrial customers across the region. The company has not yet announced any confirmed offtake agreements.

Novar has secured more than €12 million in funding from the Dutch national government, along with an additional €1 million grant from the provincial government to support the project. The developer has not disclosed a timeline for completing the remaining project infrastructure but confirmed that work is continuing to make green hydrogen available for commercial use.
