B100 Bunkering Gains Ground in Rotterdam in 2026: ENGINE Data

The number of B100 fuel samples recorded by bunker intelligence platform ENGINE in Rotterdam more than doubled in the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, indicating a growing share for the fuel within the port’s biofuel bunkering market.

ENGINE recorded 77 B100 fuel quality samples in Rotterdam between January and August 2026, a 126% increase from 34 samples during the corresponding period last year. Overall, ENGINE recorded 342 biofuel samples in the port during the first eight months of 2026, compared with 275 in the same period of 2025.

B100 share of biofuel samples rises to 23%

B100 accounted for 23% of ENGINE’s Rotterdam biofuel samples in the first eight months of 2026, up from 12% a year earlier.

Several other biofuel grades recorded a lower share of samples. B30-VLSFO accounted for 28%, down from 37%, while B30-LSMGO declined from 22% to 20%. B30-HSFO’s share fell from 7% to 3%.

B30-ULSFO was the only other grade to increase its share, rising from 22% to 27% over the same period.

ENGINE data covers part of Rotterdam’s biofuel market

ENGINE’s sample database represents only part of Rotterdam’s overall biofuel bunker market.

During the first half of 2026, suppliers in Rotterdam sold around 345,000 tonnes of bio-blended fuel oils and distillates, according to data from the Port of Rotterdam Authority. ENGINE’s samples for the same period represented approximately 135,000 tonnes, equivalent to 39% of reported sales.

Some ENGINE samples do not include a recorded quantity, meaning the platform’s actual coverage of the market is somewhat higher.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority does not publish B100 sales separately. As a result, there are no official B100 sales figures for the port, making ENGINE’s sample data an indicator of the fuel’s demand trend.

More suppliers offer B100 in Rotterdam

ENGINE’s data shows that 15 bunker suppliers sold biofuels in Rotterdam during the first eight months of 2026, compared with 10 during the same period in 2025.

The number of suppliers recorded as selling B100 increased from three to seven. Dutch bunker supplier Verde Marine Energy made its first B100 delivery in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region in June 2026.

The increase in both B100 samples and the number of suppliers offering the fuel points to a broader availability of the product in Rotterdam’s bunker market.

Dutch policy supports biofuel bunkering

Rotterdam is currently the world’s largest marine biofuel bunkering hub by volume. Demand is supported in part by the Netherlands’ implementation of the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III), which provides incentives for the use of renewable fuels in transport.

These incentives can make biofuels more competitive in Rotterdam compared with other European ports.

Under Dutch regulations, bunker suppliers operating in the country’s ports can generate maritime emission reduction units, known as ZRE A tickets, by supplying lower-emission marine fuels such as biofuels.

The combination of regulatory incentives, established bunker infrastructure and a growing supplier base has supported Rotterdam’s position as a major market for marine biofuels, while ENGINE’s 2026 sample data indicates a rising presence for B100 in particular.
