Advario and Power2X will build e-SAF hub at Port of Rotterdam.

Power2X and Advario are building a worldwide hub for synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels and sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) at the Port of Rotterdam.

At the Power2X manufacturing plant, more than 250,000 tons of e-SAF, a synthetic fuel developed from green hydrogen not derived from fossil fuels, could be generated yearly. It will be the biggest e-SAF installation ever seen with enough ultra-low carbon fuel to run almost 7,000 aircraft between Amsterdam and New York annually.

Apart from locally generated green hydrogen, the plant will make feedstock from imported green methenol derived from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon. Green methanol will come from locations rich in renewable energy and green hydrogen.

Advario will build a modern storage and logistics facility with a capacity of roughly 230,000 cubic meters backed by rail and maritime infrastructure to ensure a consistent supply chain for the green molecules.

Because of its good position in the Port of Rotterdam, which gives direct access to European airports like Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, it is an important hub for the distribution of e-fuels and sustainable aviation fuels.

Advario has been working with Power2X since April 2023 to transform the 26-hectared former Aluchemie site in Rotterdam into a hub for creative energy solutions. The site’s waterfront access and closeness to the vital hydrogen pipeline help to position it for the growth of sustainable energy within one of Europe’s principal energy and chemical hubs. Apart from helping green innovation and more general European decarbonization goals, Power2X and Advario are committed in creating future-proof solutions.

Essential for minimizing CO2 emissions, sustainable aviation fuel lowers lifecycle carbon emissions by 90% when compared to conventional jet fuels. Starting in 2030, the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation in Europe mandates increasing use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), including e-SAF. The hub will contribute forty percent.
