Arkas Line has highlighted the role of sustainable biofuels in reducing emissions from maritime transport during the Mediterranean Decarbonisation Meetings held in Marseille, where industry leaders discussed pathways to accelerate the region’s transition to low-carbon shipping.
The event, organised by Business France, brought together representatives from governments, industry and financial institutions across 11 Mediterranean countries to examine partnerships, investment opportunities and practical solutions for decarbonising the regional economy.
Biofuels in Focus for Maritime Decarbonisation
As one of the Mediterranean’s container shipping operators, Arkas Line shared its experience in adopting lower-carbon fuels and outlined its approach to supporting the shipping industry’s energy transition.
The company said biofuels represent one of the most readily deployable options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from existing vessels, allowing operators to lower their carbon footprint without major modifications to ship infrastructure.
Industry Collaboration Needed
During the panel session, “Low-Carbon Transport & Logistics: Solutions to Reduce Emissions,” Serra Tükel, Sustainability Director at Arkas Maritime Group, discussed the measures required to accelerate decarbonisation across maritime transport and logistics.
The discussions focused on expanding the use of alternative marine fuels, strengthening regulatory frameworks and increasing collaboration across the shipping value chain.
Tükel highlighted Arkas Line’s efforts to advance biofuel use in Türkiye’s maritime sector, noting that supportive regulations will play a key role in encouraging wider industry adoption and providing investment certainty.
She also stressed that achieving low-carbon shipping will require coordinated action among shipowners, ports, fuel suppliers, cargo owners and policymakers to develop the infrastructure, supply chains and incentives needed to scale sustainable marine fuel solutions.
