Berg Propulsion to Open Mumbai Office as India Shipbuilding Activity Expands

Berg Propulsion is set to establish a new office in Mumbai as the marine propulsion company expands its operations in India’s shipbuilding market. The office is scheduled to begin operations on January 1, 2027, and will serve as the company’s primary base for supporting customers and shipyards across the country.

Berg Builds on Indian Shipyard Relationships

The Mumbai operation will build on Berg Propulsion’s existing work with Indian shipbuilders, including Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Chowgule Shipyard.

The company is also supplying propulsion packages for two 33.55-metre electric tugs being built at KMEW Group’s facility in Mumbai.

Berg expects demand for propulsion technologies to grow as Indian shipyards develop vessels incorporating lower-emission and more efficient propulsion systems. The company is targeting applications including hybrid propulsion, variable-speed drives and controllable-pitch propeller systems.

Its target commercial vessel segments include newbuild tugs, dredgers and offshore support vessels.

Mumbai Office to Support National Service Network

Amrita Singh will head the new Mumbai office as General Manager. She previously served as Berg Propulsion’s Account Manager for New Sales.

She will be supported by Prasenjit Roy, a former Indian Navy Commander and former Programme Manager for Commercial Shipbuilding at GRSE.

Berg also plans to develop a network of trained service agents in Mumbai, Kochi and Visakhapatnam. The company intends to recruit locally and introduce training programmes to expand its service capabilities in India.

“Our focus will be on identifying and supporting projects where Berg solutions add value, enhance efficiency and reduce emissions,” said Singh.

The Mumbai operation could eventually extend its support to other South Asian markets, including Sri Lanka.
