China’s VENEX green-methanol plant is scaling towards 300,000 tonnes a year

The VENEX green-methanol facility located in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, is actively scaling its annual production capacity toward 300,000 tonnes. Operated as a joint venture between Towngas and Foran Energy, the project anchors a dual-production network designed to supply sustainable marine fuels.

Located in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, the facility is targeting a capacity of up to 300,000 tonnes per year and holds ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS international certifications. It is complemented by a planned facility in Foshan, Guangdong, with the two sites aiming for a combined enterprise capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year by 2028 to support regional bunkering hubs.

In August, Towngas invited an industry delegation led by the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the HKSAR Government to Inner Mongolia to tour the plant and gain first-hand insights into the local Ant Forest ecological project that underpins the facility’s green feedstock supply. The delegation comprised members from 14 companies, organisations and universities spanning the entire industry value chain, from fuel production, trading and bunkering to international shipping, finance, testing and certification, port operations and scientific research.

During the visit, Towngas signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center to deepen cooperation in the production, storage, transport and utilisation of green fuels, and to strengthen research on the international standard system for green marine fuels.

Looking ahead, Towngas said it remains committed to enhancing its green methanol production capacity, supply network and bunkering infrastructure, aiming to support Hong Kong in building a competitive hub for green marine fuel trading and bunkering.
