Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) is currently involved in research work for electric buses and hydrogen trucks, and seeks to bring these vehicles to the Indian market.
Under the BharatBenz brand, the firm manufactures and sells trucks and buses in India, and is yet to enter the electric commercial vehicle category. As a result, the company could initially launch electric buses, as the country is gearing up to switch to zero-emission vehicles across categories.
Furthermore, the company is exploring the area of small commercial vehicles (CV) with weights over five tonne. The electric mini-trucks boast the potential to address last-mile mobility needs, particularly in congested cities.
DICV will invest in both electric and hydrogen fuel technologies, and the development work on the powertrain is already underway in India as well as worldwide. EVs will be the first to be deployed as it has already been set up. In the current year, the company plans 2-3 launches.
