KMEW Secures Rs 279.33 Crore Contract for Electric Green Tug at Mumbai Port

Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd (KMEW) has secured a Rs 279.33 crore contract, including GST, from Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) for the chartering of a new battery-operated electric tug with a bollard pull capacity of 60 tonnes.

The contract has a tenure of 15 years and covers the deployment of the electric tug at Mumbai Port.

Third Green Tug Contract for KMEW

The latest order is KMEW’s third green tug contract. The company will undertake the construction of the vessel through its subsidiary, Knowledge Shipyard Limited.

KMEW will also be responsible for the tug’s operations, maintenance and technical management during the contract period.

The project is aligned with India’s Green Tug Transition Programme, which seeks to support the adoption of cleaner propulsion technologies in port operations. It also falls within the broader objectives of the Make in India initiative by involving domestic shipbuilding capabilities.

KMEW Green Tug Contract: Key Details

The contract combines vessel construction with long-term chartering and asset management. The 60-tonne bollard pull electric tug is expected to support harbour operations at Mumbai Port using battery-based propulsion.

The Rs 279.33 crore contract, including GST, will run for 15 years, with KMEW managing the vessel’s operational and maintenance requirements through the contract period.

The company said the order further expands its involvement in India’s transition towards lower-emission port equipment and electric harbour craft.
