Samsung unveils designs with ammonia and methanol propulsion

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has unveiled its newly designed ships at a recently held technology roadshow in Europe.

This design was jointly developed with French LNG cargo containment specialist GTT and obtained approval in principle from the class society Lloyd’s Register.

The containership design SHI showcased will enable methanol and ammonia propulsion in the future. In addition, a new concept of separating the operating section and the living area has been included to secure additional loading space of up to 8%. 

The South Korean shipbuilder is targeting its European customers, including those in Greece, the UK and Italy, with new concepts for LNG carriers and eco containerships.

An LNG unit introduced features three cargo tanks instead of the traditional four, an improved boil-off rate of more than 5%, and, according to Samsung Heavy, significantly lower maintenance costs due to less equipment and parts required for each cargo hold.

Samsung Heavy has rolled out several solutions for the next generation of ships, including carbon capture and storage technology, fuel cells, ammonia, and hydrogen, as well as the development of autonomous and smart ships. The shipbuilder also recently developed a design for what it says is a next-generation floating liquefied natural gas production facility (FLNG) for a sector that is poised for $35bn in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awards through to the end of 2027.
