SECI invites bids

SECI invites bids for green ammonia supply under SIGHT programme

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has invited bids for the production and supply of green ammonia under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, as India seeks to develop domestic clean-fuel supply chains and support industrial decarbonisation.

The tender has been issued under SIGHT Mode-2A-Tranche-II, which provides a framework for supporting green hydrogen and its derivatives through financial incentives intended to improve project viability. The programme forms part of India’s efforts to develop domestic capabilities across the green hydrogen value chain and reduce emissions from energy-intensive sectors, including fertilisers, chemicals and refining.

Green ammonia production and supply tender

Under the tender, eligible developers are expected to submit proposals for the production and supply of green ammonia. The deadline for bid submission is October 27, 2026.

The information available does not specify key project parameters such as the targeted production capacity, estimated investment, project location, bid security requirements or project duration.

The tender is expected to be relevant to renewable energy developers, electrolyser manufacturers, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies, ammonia producers and other technology providers participating in India’s developing green hydrogen ecosystem.

Green ammonia applications extend beyond fertilisers

Green ammonia is produced using renewable hydrogen and nitrogen. The hydrogen is generated through electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, avoiding the fossil-fuel-based hydrogen production associated with conventional ammonia.

While fertiliser production remains a major potential application, green ammonia is also being considered as a marine fuel and as a means of transporting hydrogen for international energy trade.

For producers, the availability and cost of renewable electricity will be a key factor in determining the economics of green ammonia production. Wind-solar hybrid projects could provide more consistent power availability for electrolysers, while integrated renewable energy and ammonia facilities could support operational efficiency and supply reliability.

Tender could support domestic green ammonia market

The SECI tender adds to efforts to establish more predictable demand for green ammonia in India. The eventual impact on the market will depend on factors including the capacity awarded, incentive structure, project execution schedules and producers’ ability to achieve competitive production costs.

In the longer term, increased domestic availability of green ammonia could help expand its use across industrial and energy applications. However, production economics will continue to be influenced by renewable electricity prices, electrolyser costs, project utilisation and other infrastructure requirements.
