Finland-based marine technology firm Wartsila is set to commercially introduce its Two-Stroke Future Fuels Conversion platform in Q1 2022, as efforts for decarbonisation in the shipping industry gather pace.
The firm has successfully conducted initial trials of the platform at its laboratory in Trieste, Italy.
MSC Shipmanagement has served as a partner in the piloting and development of the engine combustion technology platform.
This platform is projected to allow ‘fast and cost-effective’ modification of two-stroke main engines, enabling them to run on green future fuels.
Initially, the solution will retrofit engines to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) with insignificant methane slip.
Going forward, it will facilitate the use of alternative green fuels or fuel blends, following their commercial availability.
In a statement, Wartsila said: “A world-first feature of the concept is the cryogenic fuel supply system, which together with a revolutionary injection system, provides flexible and optimised operational performance under all conditions.”
This conversion solution will fulfil future environmental regulations and help extend the operational life of assets.
