Himachal Pradesh Plans Major Boost to Public Transport with E-Buses and Digital Upgrades

In a move aimed at strengthening public transport infrastructure, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to enhance services across the state, especially considering the region’s challenging terrain. The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting focused on improving the corporation’s operational efficiency and expanding its service capabilities.

The Chief Minister emphasized that HRTC plays a vital role in providing mobility to the people and assured the full backing of the state government to improve the quality and reach of its services. As part of this commitment, he announced that 297 type I electric buses will be deployed by March 2026. Additionally, procurement is underway for 30 type II electric buses.

Exploring further sustainable mobility solutions, the Chief Minister instructed officials to assess the feasibility of introducing green hydrogen-powered buses in the near future. He reiterated the state’s goal of becoming a green energy leader by March 2026.

In line with modernizing the transport system, the Chief Minister also directed the implementation of a single digital platform for concessional bus pass applications. He called for the introduction of a real-time bus monitoring system and the adoption of digital tools for improved operational efficiency. An e-office system is set to be introduced at the HRTC headquarters to streamline administrative processes.

A new HRTC workshop will also be established at Theog in Shimla district, further supporting infrastructure development for the state transport system. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri praised the efforts of HRTC employees and offered suggestions to strengthen the corporation’s operations. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, along with senior government officials including Advisor Infrastructure Anil Kapil, Additional Chief Secretary R D Nazeem, Principal Secretary Devesh Kumar, Secretary to Chief Minister Rakesh Kanwar, OSD to Chief Minister Gopal Sharma, and HRTC Managing Director Dr Nipun Jindal were also present at the meeting.
