In an effort to initiate green shipping, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in India has planned to develop and build Hydrogen Fuelled Electric Vessels (FCV) at Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL). It is the first indigenous Hydrogen FCV to be developed in the country.
According to Sarbananda Sonowal, the Shipping Minister of India, the plan for building Hydrogen FCV is keeping pace with the Global Maritime Green Transitions.
The FCV development is expected cost about $0.23 million of with 75% would be fundec by the central government, and the it will be based on Low Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Technology (LT-PEM).
CSL has partnered with KPIT Technologies Limited and Indian developers in the areas of Hydrogen Fuel cell, power train and Indian Register of Shipping for developing rules and regulation for such vessels.
