Norway-based Corvus Energy, a global leader in marine energy storage, has introduced Blue Whale NxtGen Power, a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) energy storage system developed in partnership with BYD Energy Storage. The launch marks the first commercial product to emerge from the strategic cooperation between the two companies, first announced in December 2025.
What makes Blue Whale NxtGen Power different?
The system is built specifically for vessels where power demand, rather than total energy capacity, determines performance, making it well suited to tugs, workboats, offshore vessels using batteries for power optimisation, and large ferries that need rapid charging between crossings.
Under the partnership structure, BYD Energy Storage supplies the battery cell technology and cell stack manufacturing, while Corvus Energy handles the overall system design and architecture, including marine safety features, battery management systems, cybersecurity, digital battery passport capability, and class approval. Corvus also manages final assembly, testing, and lifetime service support.
How does this fit into Corvus’ existing product line?
Blue Whale NxtGen Power is built on Corvus’ established NxtGen platform, sharing core elements such as the stack interface, battery module design, battery management system, and cell string assembly across the company’s broader NxtGen portfolio. For customers already operating Blue Whale NxtGen systems, installation practices, service procedures, and spare parts management remain largely unchanged, reducing training requirements and operational complexity while extending the platform’s high-power capability.
Thor Humerfelt, Head of Product Innovation at Corvus Energy, said LFP technology has matured significantly in recent years and now offers a cost-effective solution across a wide range of maritime applications. He added that combining BYD Energy Storage’s manufacturing scale and technology leadership with Corvus’ maritime experience would accelerate innovation, reduce system costs, and support the industry’s shift toward zero-emission operations.
What comes next in the Corvus-BYD partnership?
Blue Whale NxtGen Power follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two companies in December 2025 and a Strategic Cooperation Agreement reached in May 2026, both aimed at co-developing marine battery systems based on high-rate LFP technology. This product is the first commercial output of that framework.
Corvus and BYD Energy Storage will present Blue Whale NxtGen Power alongside Corvus’ full LFP portfolio at SMM Hamburg on 2 September, at the Corvus Energy stand in Hall B6, Stand 429.

Corvus Energy has delivered more than 1,350 projects worldwide and says over half of the world’s vessels equipped with zero-emission technology run on its systems, positioning the company as one of the most established players in marine battery storage as the industry accelerates its shift toward electrification and hybrid propulsion.
