Fincantieri begins construction of world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship

Fincantieri has officially laid the keel for Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, at its Ancona shipyard in Italy. Scheduled to enter service in December 2026, the vessel marks the 14th ocean-going newbuild for Viking Ocean Cruises.

Engineered with sustainability at the forefront, Viking Libra will be equipped with a hydrogen propulsion system and advanced fuel-cell technology capable of generating 6 megawatts of power. This innovation will allow the ship to operate with zero harmful emissions, making it one of the cleanest vessels at sea and enabling safe passage through environmentally sensitive waters.

The ship’s maiden voyage is set for December 2026 from Piraeus, Greece, on a 10-day eastern Mediterranean itinerary. It will remain in the region through the year before repositioning to Northern Europe for winter sailings in early 2027.

Shipyard executives and Viking leadership hailed the keel-laying as a landmark moment in the cruise industry’s decarbonization journey, demonstrating hydrogen’s viability for passenger shipping on a commercial scale.

While its propulsion system is groundbreaking, Viking Libra will share the overall design of Viking’s newest ships—Viking Vela (2024), Viking Vesta (2025), and Viking Mira (2026)—all of which feature hybrid systems built to be hydrogen-ready for future retrofits.

Viking has also confirmed plans for a second hydrogen-powered vessel, Viking Astrea, due for delivery in 2027, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable cruising.
