FuelTech signs technical collaboration with Sunship on bio-LNG for dual-fuel ships

Engineering company FuelTech has entered into a technical collaboration with German shipowner Sunship Schiffahrtskontor KG Reederei M. Lauterjung to support the use of bio-LNG in dual-fuel vessels.

The agreement was signed during SMM 2026 and focuses on the maintenance and long-term performance of FuelTech’s Gas Valve Trains (GVTs), which are currently operating with bio-LNG.

Partnership to build bio-LNG operational experience

Under the collaboration, FuelTech will work with Sunship to gain additional operational experience with bio-LNG and support the continued use of the fuel in maritime applications.

The companies will focus on the performance and maintenance of GVT systems in bio-LNG operations. The collaboration is intended to provide operational insights that can support the wider deployment of bio-LNG in dual-fuel ships.

FuelTech said the agreement will allow both companies to develop further experience with bio-LNG while supporting its adoption as an alternative marine fuel.

Bio-LNG gains attention as marine fuel

Bio-LNG is produced from renewable sources and can be used in LNG-capable marine engines. Its compatibility with existing LNG-fuelled vessel systems makes it a potential option for operators seeking to reduce the emissions associated with conventional fossil LNG.

For dual-fuel vessels, bio-LNG can be used alongside conventional marine fuels, depending on engine and fuel-system capabilities.
