Moeve to Supply 40,000 Tons of 2G Marine Biofuel to Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea in Canary Islands

Moeve has signed a strategic long-term agreement with Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea to deliver up to 40,000 tons of second-generation (2G) marine biofuel through December 2025 in the Canary Islands. The deal, Moeve’s largest biofuel contract to date and its first in the archipelago, includes the option to extend supply into 2026.

This agreement strengthens Moeve’s role in advancing sustainable maritime transport and underscores its longstanding commitment to the Canary Islands, where the company has operated for nearly a century. The 2G biofuels—produced at Moeve’s San Roque Energy Park in Cádiz and La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva—can reduce CO₂ emissions by as much as 90% over their life cycle compared to conventional fuels. They also work with existing ship engines and fueling infrastructure, allowing immediate implementation without the need for major technical upgrades.

Sergio Vélez, CEO of Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea, described the partnership as a significant step in the company’s environmental strategy. “This agreement adds momentum to our ongoing efforts to reduce emissions—efforts that include everything from route optimization to early adoption of alternative fuels. It reflects our broader commitment to sustainable operations and to protecting the marine ecosystems we rely on,” Vélez said.

Port authorities in both Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife have expressed strong support for the initiative. Beatriz Calzada, President of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, noted the deal’s alignment with the port’s green transition strategy. “This is part of our broader goal to offer excellent, sustainable services,” she said.

Pedro Suárez, President of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, added that the biofuel delivery marks a milestone in efforts to improve port sustainability and competitiveness. “We’ve been laying the groundwork for energy transition for years, and this supply agreement supports our long-term vision,” he said.
