Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has introduced a robotic pipe spool fabrication facility, marking a move toward greater automation in shipbuilding production processes.
The new facility, named PIPE ROBOFAB, is located in Haman County, South Gyeongsang Province, and covers an area of approximately 6,500 square metres. It has an annual production capacity of around 100,000 pipe spools, which are critical components used in ship piping systems.
Automation and digital integration
According to SHI, the facility integrates robotic fabrication technologies with a digital management system that connects the entire production chain, from piping design through machining, alignment, welding and logistics.
The company said the system incorporates Vision AI and automated handling processes to enable high-precision manufacturing and reduce production lead times. The use of robotics is also expected to improve safety conditions in fabrication environments.
Sung-an Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of SHI, said:
“The PIPE ROBOFAB represents an innovation in pipe spool fabrication achieved through the integration of our highly skilled welding expertise and 3X technologies. It will serve as a catalyst for upgrading the manufacturing competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry.”
Workforce and industry implications
The launch comes as shipbuilders seek to increase efficiency and address labour constraints while managing rising order volumes.
Won-young Choi, Head of SHI’s labor association, said:
“AI and automation are an unavoidable trend across all industries. However, with the expansion of shipbuilding orders, labor and management will continue to communicate smoothly to increase jobs and ensure employment stability for field employees and a safe workplace.”
The introduction of automated fabrication systems reflects a broader shift toward smart shipyard operations, where robotics, artificial intelligence and digital workflows are increasingly used to enhance productivity and quality control.
