Siemens Energy Selects EST-Floattech Battery

Siemens Energy Selects EST-Floattech Battery System for Marco Polo Marine’s CSOV Plus

Siemens Energy has contracted Dutch maritime battery specialist EST-Floattech to supply the energy storage system for Marco Polo Marine’s new Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) Plus, which is being built at the company’s shipyard in Batam, Indonesia.

Siemens Energy is acting as the system integrator for the vessel’s hybrid power plant. EST-Floattech will supply more than 1 MWh of its Octopus High Energy (HE) battery modules for hybrid propulsion and dynamic positioning (DP) operations.

The contract also represents EST-Floattech’s first project in Singapore and Taiwan.

CSOV Plus designed for offshore wind and oil and gas

Designed by Norway-based Salt Ship Design, the CSOV Plus has been developed for operations in both the offshore wind and oil and gas sectors.

The vessel will feature a 100-tonne active heave-compensated crane and a motion-compensated gangway designed to enable walk-to-work transfers in significant wave heights of up to 3.0 metres. Its hull and propulsion arrangement have also been configured for station-keeping operations.

Construction began at Marco Polo Marine’s Batam shipyard in the second quarter of 2026, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

Battery system to support DP operations

The Octopus High Energy battery system will operate alongside the vessel’s generator sets and Siemens Energy’s BlueDrive PlusC system.

During DP operations, the batteries will provide spinning reserve and respond to changes in electrical load. This allows the vessel to operate with fewer generators running, while keeping the generators in service closer to their optimum operating loads.

The arrangement is intended to reduce fuel consumption and engine wear during operations involving frequent load fluctuations.

Battery capacity can be expanded to 20 MWh

The CSOV Plus has been designed with the option to expand its battery capacity as operational requirements evolve.

The initial installation will provide more than 1 MWh of energy storage, while the vessel has been designed to accommodate a battery system of up to 20 MWh for future fully electric sailing.

EST-Floattech’s modular Octopus Series architecture allows additional battery modules to be integrated with the existing battery management system. Space for the future expansion has been incorporated into the vessel design.

The company said Siemens Energy’s selection was based on its experience with maritime electrification and the suitability of the Octopus High Energy system for the CSOV Plus’s operating profile.

CSOV Plus to support Taiwan offshore wind projects

Following delivery, the vessel will be operated by PKR Offshore (PKRO), Marco Polo Marine’s Taiwan-based subsidiary.

PKRO will deploy the CSOV Plus for Siemens Gamesa under a multi-year framework agreement covering offshore wind projects in Taiwanese waters.

The company’s first CSOV, MP Wind Archer, has been operating in Taiwan since 2025.

EST-Floattech highlights battery scalability

Walter van der Pennen, Chief Commercial Officer, EST-Floattech, thanked Siemens Energy and Marco Polo Marine for their trust, and partner Durapower for its role in securing the company’s first Singapore project.

“Offshore wind support vessels in Asia-Pacific have demanding operating profiles: long periods on DP, constant load changes and multi-year charters,” he said. “A battery system that supports those operations reliably, and that can be extended when the operator is ready to go fully electric, is exactly what the Octopus Series was designed for.”

What battery system will be installed on the CSOV Plus?

EST-Floattech will supply more than 1 MWh of Octopus High Energy battery modules for Marco Polo Marine’s CSOV Plus. The vessel’s battery system will support hybrid propulsion and DP operations and can be expanded to as much as 20 MWh to enable future fully electric sailing.
