WinGD Celebrates another Dual-Fuel Launch, as Maersk takes Delivery of the Methanol-Capable Tema Mærsk Container Ship

New dual-fuel container vessel highlights growing adoption of methanol-ready propulsion systems

WinGD has marked another milestone in the maritime sector’s fuel transition following the delivery of the Tema Mærsk, a new dual-fuel container vessel for A.P. Moller – Maersk powered by the company’s methanol-capable X82DF-M/E engine platform.

The vessel was officially named on 29 May at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China, with representatives from WinGD and Maersk attending the ceremony.

Multi-fuel propulsion gains momentum in container shipping

The Tema Mærsk is equipped with WinGD’s X82DF-M/E two-stroke engine platform, designed to operate on methanol while also offering compatibility with ethanol and other alcohol-based fuels.

The delivery forms part of Maersk’s broader fleet renewal strategy aimed at expanding its dual-fuel vessel portfolio as the shipping industry moves toward lower-carbon fuel options.

Maersk ordered WinGD’s X-DF-M dual-fuel engines in 2023 for a series of six 9,000 TEU container vessels.

The X82DF-M/E extends WinGD’s methanol engine offering to larger 82-bore engine configurations, supporting growing demand for flexible fuel solutions across larger vessel segments.

Focus on fuel flexibility and future readiness

Shipping companies are increasingly pursuing multi-fuel propulsion strategies as uncertainty remains around the long-term availability, pricing and regulation of alternative marine fuels.

WinGD said the engine platform is designed to support operational flexibility while allowing shipowners to adapt to evolving fuel markets and decarbonisation requirements.

Dominik Schneiter, CEO of WinGD, said:

“As another methanol-capable ship joins the global fleet, we’re proud to play our part in the industry’s decarbonisation journey.”

He added:

“With inherent flexibility to accommodate multiple alcohol fuels, our technology ensures that early adopters are not locked into a single pathway as the fuel landscape develops.”

Maersk continues low-carbon fleet expansion

Maersk has been among the most active container shipping companies investing in alternative-fuel vessels, particularly methanol-capable ships, as part of its emissions reduction strategy.

Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, said:

“Developing future-proof engine technology is a critical step in building the flexibility and reliability which global supply chains depend on.”

He added:

“The energy transition of the shipping industry is a complex challenge that requires close collaboration across the entire ecosystem – from shipowners and regulators to fuel producers, infrastructure providers and engine manufacturers.”

Methanol adoption continues to grow

Methanol is emerging as one of the leading alternative marine fuels due to its relatively mature handling infrastructure, dual-fuel engine availability and potential pathway toward low- and zero-carbon variants such as green methanol and e-methanol.

Industry stakeholders continue to scale investments in methanol-fuelled vessel orders, fuel production projects and bunkering infrastructure as regulatory pressure on shipping emissions increases.
