Shanghai Port Handles Record 8,016-Tonne Biomethanol Bunkering for CMA CGM Vessel

CMA CGM has completed what it describes as the world’s largest single-batch biomethanol bunkering operation at Shanghai Port, supplying 8,016 tonnes of alternative fuel to the 13,000-TEU dual-fuel container vessel CMA CGM Osmium.

The operation was carried out in partnership with Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG).

8,016 Tonnes of Biomethanol Loaded in Single Operation

The 8,016-tonne bunkering operation exceeds previous alternative-fuel bunkering records and provides enough fuel for CMA CGM Osmium to complete its transoceanic voyage from Shanghai to the East Coast of South America.

According to the information provided, using biomethanol for the voyage is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by the equivalent of 10,000 tonnes of CO2 compared with conventional marine fuels.

The operation also demonstrates the use of ship-to-ship biomethanol bunkering at a large scale at a major container port.

Biomethanol Supply Chain Links Jilin to Shanghai

The biomethanol supplied to CMA CGM Osmium was produced through Shanghai Electric Group’s green methanol project in Taonan, Jilin Province.

The fuel was transported from Northeast China through Dalian Port before being delivered for bunkering at Shanghai Port, linking production, port logistics and marine fuel supply within the same alternative-fuel chain.

CMA CGM’s Decarbonisation Strategy

The bunkering operation forms part of CMA CGM’s fleet renewal and decarbonisation strategy. The company is deploying dual-fuel vessels capable of operating on lower-carbon fuels as it works towards its target of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050.
