Lhyfe and STRABAG partner to accelerate green hydrogen projects in Germany

Lhyfe and STRABAG have signed a strategic co-development agreement aimed at accelerating green hydrogen project deployment in Germany amid growing regulatory support for renewable hydrogen under the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III).

The framework agreement, announced on 28 May 2026, could later be expanded to other European markets.

Focus on Germany’s renewable hydrogen market

The partnership comes as Germany advances the transposition of RED III into national legislation, introducing binding targets for the use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) in certain industrial sectors.

According to the companies, the evolving regulatory framework is helping create greater long-term demand visibility for renewable hydrogen and supporting investment decisions across the sector.

Combining hydrogen production and construction expertise

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on identifying, developing and executing green hydrogen infrastructure projects by combining Lhyfe’s hydrogen production capabilities with STRABAG’s construction and project development expertise.

Lhyfe said it became Europe’s largest producer of bulk RFNBO hydrogen from water electrolysis in 2025. The company currently operates four RFNBO-certified hydrogen production sites, with two additional facilities under construction.

Its infrastructure portfolio also includes:

  • More than 80 Type 4 hydrogen transport containers
  • Around 15 hydrogen storage sites
  • Bulk hydrogen transport operations across Europe

STRABAG said it will contribute engineering, construction, financing and long-term infrastructure development capabilities to support project implementation.

Targeting faster deployment and reduced project risk

The companies stated that the partnership is intended to:

  • Accelerate hydrogen project planning and delivery
  • Reduce development and execution risks
  • Support the scaling of hydrogen infrastructure in Germany and potentially across Europe

Wolfgang Zechmeister, Division Manager at STRABAG, said:

“This framework agreement is an exciting start to our partnership with Lhyfe that will deepen our project development in hydrogen.”

He added:

“Green hydrogen is a valuable tool for decarbonising energy-intensive industries. STRABAG already has extensive experience in the construction of renewable energy infrastructure and will contribute to its further development.”

Luc Graré, Chief Strategy Officer at Lhyfe, said:

“This partnership comes at a decisive moment for the market.”

He continued:

“Combining STRABAG’s industrial and construction expertise with Lhyfe’s experience as Europe’s largest producer of RFNBO hydrogen creates a strong foundation to accelerate project development and execution.”
