Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has completed the first green methanol bunkering of its latest dual-fuel container vessel, OOCL Wisdom, at Qingdao Port, before the ship commenced its maiden voyage to Europe.
The operation marks the commercial debut of OOCL’s first methanol dual-fuel containership and represents another step in the carrier’s strategy to expand its fleet of alternative fuel vessels.
World’s Largest Methanol Dual-Fuel Container Ship Enters Service
OOCL Wisdom is the first of seven methanol dual-fuel container vessels being introduced by the company. With a capacity of 24,168 TEU, the vessel is currently the world’s largest methanol dual-fuel container ship.
The newbuild has been deployed on OOCL’s Asia–North Europe Loop 1 (LL1) service, one of the company’s key long-haul trade routes connecting Asia with Northern Europe.
Methanol dual-fuel vessels are designed to operate on both conventional marine fuel and methanol, providing operational flexibility while supporting efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as green methanol availability expands.
Green Methanol Bunkering Supports Fleet Decarbonisation
The successful bunkering at Qingdao Port highlights the growing availability of green methanol infrastructure as shipping companies invest in alternative-fuel vessels to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations.
The deployment of OOCL Wisdom forms part of the company’s broader fleet renewal programme aimed at improving operational efficiency and supporting its long-term decarbonisation objectives.
Peter Pan, Director of Trades at OOCL, said:
“OOCL Wisdom completed its first green methanol bunkering and commenced its maiden voyage to Europe at Qingdao Port, representing a significant achievement of the deepening collaboration between OOCL and Shandong Port Group, and reflecting OOCL’s steadfast commitment to green and low-carbon development, digital intelligence and sustainability.”
He added:
“Looking ahead, OOCL will continue to remain customer-focused, advance fleet upgrading and low-carbon transition, and enhance service capabilities, providing safer, more reliable and sustainable logistics solutions to support the continued growth of global trade.”
